Living
in Invercargill. After leaving school at the end of 1960, I went
to work at Gormack Wilkes Davidson staying there until
late 69. Got married to Lynne Sutherland in June 69
(daughter of the great Southland rugby player Alex
(A.G.) Sutherland) and we went to Aus. Working in
Brisbane & Adelaide. Came home when mum died in
71. I started a career with the Invercargill fire
brigade (now NZ Fire Service) in Oct 71. Time off
included a variety of part-time jobs i.e.
sandblasting, spray painting, truck driving etc.
During the late 80's I purchased a small screen
printing business (Down South T Shirts). In late 95
with close to 25 years service in the NZFS the body
got a bit past the rigours of fire fighting so I
retired from the NZFS, and continued on building up
the screen printing business. I may be able to fully
retire in another 100 or so years.
Lynne and I have had several overseas trips inc.
Aus (about 8) USA (2) UK Holland and Fiji. The grass
may look greener over the ditch but we still return
home.
I still enjoy riding my motor bike to rallys
around the lower South Island and also the odd game of
golf.

I
have finally put "pen” to paper. For someone who is
has never been at a loss for words, when it came for
me to write about me, I could not find any words.
I left school to work for The Southland Times as a
photographer. This great job lasted until I was “let
go” on medical grounds. After moving to Wellington I
joined my father and became a painter and decorator,
growing the business until we were one of the larger
firms in the Wellington region.
After that I moved into sales (wonderful work) where I
still am, only working in retail.
Continued my love of aviation, flying radio controlled
aeroplanes, then found out from a modelling friend,
that to get a microlight licence all that is needed is
a standard drivers licence. Airborne at last!
After three marriages I am currently in Palmerston
North putting my life back together.
When I got your letter about the website, and went and
looked at it, my first reaction was how bloody small
we were.
Anyway I would like to present, both to you and Jim an
ATTABOY first class for a fantastic site and bringing
back all those wonderful memories.

Hi
guys
It's been a long time. About last March 2009 I
received a phone call from Jim Hair asking me would I
like to tell you a bit about myself and what I have
been doing over the last fifty years. You all know how
persuasive he can be.
After leaving Marist I was sent to St Kevin's College
in Oamaru, leaving school at 15. From there I tried a
little farming and wool store work. 1961 I set off for
Stewart Island for 2 years possum trapping, deer
stalking and track cutting for the NZ Forestry. 1963
started working for NZ Steel and Tube, then on to the
sawmill Birch & Co. above the Bluecliffs beach at
Tuatapere for 3 years. First at the mill then joining
the bush crew after the mill burnt down. Moving to Te
Anau 1967, truck driving and working for Te Anau
rabbit board and trying my hand at venison recovery
for 2 ˝ years.
In 1973 came back to Invercargill and worked at Daily
Freightways , a freight forwarding company and met my
partner Helen and stayed with the company for 18
years, retiring in 1992. Helen is a keen bowler,
member of a walk group and deeply involved in
genealogy. I am still a keen outdoor person, hunting
and fishing and lots of sailing in my 6m trailer
sailor “Skylark 11” on our southern lakes. I am also
involved in stoat trapping for the Pomona Island
Trust at Lake Manapouri. My other interests are
gardening and cycling. Now wearing glasses, 2 hearing
aids and going bald I surely qualify for the state
pension February 2010. What more can a man want.
Hoping to meet up with you all one day ...
Geoffrey died suddenly at Kew Hospital on 28 October
2014. Click here to
