Other students who were part of
the class between 1954 and 1963

Although the main focus of the web site is to record those pupils who were in the 1957 Form 1 class (50 years ago), we have decided to try and include all pupils who were part of the greater class from 1954 through to 1963. Most pupils stayed at Marist through to 1963, while others left earlier and some arrived after 1957.  More names are still to be added. Please let us know if you can remember any we have missed.

Jim Cutler

Jim has now retired to Lowburn in Central Otago where he has taken up fly fishing. Prior to that he was living in Wellington. Manager Corporate Documentation (Planning), Planning Branch, Headquarters New Zealand Defence Force.
I married Glenda in 1969 and we have two adult daughters (Brigitte, Doctor of Physiotherapy and working in her own practice in Springfield, Illinois USA, and Charlotte, Doctor of Chemistry and working as a Head Scientist in Boston, USA.  Glenda is the Finance / Administration Officer for the Departments of Surgery & Anaesthesia and Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Otago University - Wellington.
When not at work in Wellington I am frequently seen patrolling the banks of the Tongariro River at Turangi and seldom return home without a bag limit of fine rainbow trout.  For something different - and after a year of training and having been challenged by my oldest daughter - I participated in the United States Masters Swimming “Big Shoulders” long-distance swimming event (5 kilometres) in Lake Michigan in September 2006, at Chicago.  After a storm-tossing swim (the roughest in many years) I managed to arrive home in 1 hour 54 minutes -  7th in my age group (over 60s); not bad for an old bugger.
Glenda and I may retire (?????) in a few years and will most likely end up somewhere in Central Otago.
A record of my army career, etc and some more photos can be seen by clicking here.

Norman Daly

Since leaving Marist in 1959, and becoming a certified carpenter, most of my working life has been involved in building and construction.  My 9 year employment with Southland Enterprises, as a Woodwork Instructor / Supervisor was very satisfying, and taught me a lot.  In March 1999, we moved to Canberra, Australia, and I continued in my trade.  We retired in 2008 and now live in Christchurch.
My interests include Rugby and social golf.  My involvement with Southland Rugby Union led to me representing Southland Junior Advisory at N.Z.R.F.U. level.
I married Esme in 1968, we have 2 sons, & 3 grand-children.
Norm and Esme are now living in Queensland.

Living at Wheatsheaf, Victoria, Australia. Jim Hair's call was a real pleasure. He lives close to Thames Ditton, home of AC cars, where Anitra and I lived while working in London. Apart from cousin Bill Cochran, I think Jim was the last classmate I met since dipping out at Uni.  Jim was working in Dunedin where I was into my post-army IT career at Allied Computer Processors. Coincidentally, ACP had a reunion QB weekend but I opted for the Vietnam Vets reunion in Wellington. http://lattas.org/acp.JPG shows we had something special at ACP - NZ's first biz commune :-)  Marist and Tuakau photos are most interesting and I am surprised at my ready recognition of classmates. Wouldn't be true of my other 13 schools! The Tuakau sports day photo had a sequel in that since 1974 Anitra and I have been orienteering which, with XC skiing, has taken us to out of the way places in Australasia, Canada and Europe. After Dunedin I lived in Christchurch, Calgary, Melbourne, Wheatsheaf. Our home of 10 years near Daylesford places us in one of Oceania's best orienteering areas. With Victoria's largest forest backing onto us, we are keen mountain bikers and annually stage Cyclic Navigator - www.mapsport.net.au  Unfortunately we have to work in Melbourne but hey, our own forest block keeps us carbon positive ;-)

Leon Finn

Living in Cambridge. From memory, I left Marist back in late 1954 due to the family moving initially to Palmerston Nth and then to Hamilton.
After leaving College in 1962, I spent three years in retail and in 1966 entered Holy Name Seminary, in 1968 went to Holy Cross College Mosgiel where I studied Theology and the left after deciding studying for the Priesthood was not for me.
In 1970 I married Judith and over a period of time four sons arrived. I have worked for the Department of Labour for over 40 years having worked in Hamilton and Palmerton North. My career has covered most activities within the Service and currently I work in the Immigration Division on Border and Compliance activities. Leon retired at the end of 2013.
Judy and I own a very large two storied home in Cambridge with six bedrooms. We still have one son at home, have three grand children and another due any day.
As a family we are very musical, with a great passion for Irish music and dancing. A drop of the hard stuff never goes a stray.
On the 16th of May this year, I am being ordained a Permanent Deacon for the Catholic Diocese of Hamilton by Bishop Brown, so this will be a great occasion for me. If you go to www.diaconate.co.nz. you will find information on the Diaconate, and also some recent photos of the class group who are being ordained with me.
I am certainly looking forward to this new vocation.
My memories of Marist are still very vivid to me, and they were certainly great days.
God Bless.

I attended St Josephs Primary, finishing my school years at Marist Brothers. I played drums in a band that was formed at school called Cotton Pickers. In 1959 I joined a band called Tracers and in 1962 I played professionally in Christchurch for 6 months. Up until the time of playing in Christchurch, I worked for an oil company, paint company, timber company, plus motor dealers. I married  Bev Wills in 1964 and have a family consisting of 3 girls and 1 boy. From 1981 to 1995 I did rugby commentaries from Rugby Park, Invercargill, for Radio N.Z. My wife Bev passed away in 1987. I remarried in 1994 to Kathryn Corbin. Kath has 2 boys and 1 girl and now between us we have 11 grandchildren. Kath and I moved to Brisbane in 1996. I am currently working for a timber company and hope to retire late next year.

Bernard was in our Class of 1954 . But, sadly, died six months into his schooling. It was a sad day for the boys in Standard Two when they drove the hearse and coffin through the Guard Of Honour up the drive to Tay Street. It was the first time most of the students had experienced death.

Allan and Jim are doing a great job.  Thanks, and don’t give up on those who, like me, are a bit slow in supplying their current profile.
I have been happily married to Bernadette since 1969.  We have had five children.  Michelle died when she was three.  Maree, Janine and Denise live in Wellington and Marty is currently in London.  We also have three grandchildren.
I joined State Insurance after leaving school and stayed with them, through various changes of ownership, for 38 years.  After working for five years in Invercargill, I transferred to Auckland where I met and married Bernadette.  We spent ten years there and two in Timaru then came to Palmerston North in 1978. My redundancy experience occurred in 2000 however new opportunities presented and I have been working in an independent capacity, mainly as a loss Adjuster, since then.
Palmerston North has been good to us.  The children's’ education needs were met by Our Lady of Lourdes primary school, St Peter’s College, Massey University and Otago University which equipped them to fly the coop and make their own way in life.
We live on ten acres near Palmerston North and enjoy regular family and grandchildren visits.  I continue to be kept busy with contract insurance work and Bernadette is the Principal’s Secretary at St Peter’s College.  We enjoy small farm life and I maintain an interest in thoroughbred horse racing.

After Marist I joined the Post Office and trained as a telegraphist in Invercargill.  Worked in Invercargill till 1966 when I was transferred to Rotorua (what a culture shock that was!!), then to Tauranga and on to Headquarters in Wellington where I joined Overseas Telecommunications.  During a career of 21 years in Headquarters I also spent time as the Administrative Assistant to the Deputy Director-General of the PO which work I really enjoyed and represented New Zealand at a number of Commonwealth Telecommunications meetings overseas. I was a casualty of the corporatisation of the NZPO in 1988 and took voluntary severance at the beginning of 1989.  Then I worked for the Australian High Commission in Wellington for ten years as their Information Librarian and thoroughly enjoyed it.  Since being made redundant there (thanks to the internet!!) my wife Lynda and I have operated a very successful cleaning business.  Lynda and I married in 1979 and we have lived in Karori in Wellington since our marriage.  We have no children.  I am active in the local Catholic Church.  I well remember joining Form 2 at Marist with Brother Andrew who was probably the best teacher I ever had. The years at Marist I remember very fondly and I was horrified on a visit to Invercargill a couple of years ago to see that the site is now a flaming great sales park with supermarkets, mitre 10s etc. I love reading, running and I am an avid All Blacks supporter.

Richard O'Connell

Married Monica,  three sons and one grand-child.
All the boys have left home with their own careers and interesting lifestyles, such as climbing the worlds mountains, one has had a kidney transplant at age 26 and another is an ultra distance athlete and last year ran in a 250km race across the Gobi Desert. (I tried to explain to him that the wheel has been invented.)
I arrived at Marist as a shy country kid to start 3rd form and after 5 years returned to farming and country life. Initially on a family farm and then Monica and I have farmed on our own account 405 acres at Mabel Bush, part of the original farm. By today's standards just a large lifestyle block. Four years ago we changed our farming practice to make life easier and start the slide to retirement.
I have been involved in many farming, community and sporting organisations at both local and national level. However, as part of the slide towards retirement I have got out of most, except that I am still a councillor for the Southland J.P.'s Assn.
I am a keen follower of all sports and roll the odd bowl, and hit an even odder golf ball.
We have enjoyed a bit of travel in recent years but still have a few countries to tick off the "Bucket List"  Monica retired 18 months ago and feels I should also so there would be more time to travel
Despite, currency fluctuations, bank managers and commodity prices the farm in Southland has given me a rewarding and fulfilling life. Also great to bring up a family where the outdoors and the cycles of life are so evident. As a family we have done everything together from scuba diving, skiing, to land yachting.
The days at Marist seem only like yesterday.
